Netizens criticize PMA drivers’ ‘convoy’ in Jalan Kayu

A ‘convoy’ of personal mobility aid (PMA) drivers was seen at Jalan Kayu near Abundant Grace Presbyterian Church.

Overwhelming Michael He alerted Stomp to a video of the incident posted on Singapore Road Accident’s Facebook page.

In the video, three PMAs can be seen moving in single file along the sidewalk.

There are two people in one of the PMAs.

The headline cheekily reads: “Cyclist(s) and pedestrian(s) please give way.”

Facebook users criticized the size of the PMAs and also questioned whether the drivers were healthy.

Under Active Mobility ActA PMA, such as a mobility scooter or motorized wheelchair, should have only one seat and be designed to carry only one person who is unable to walk or has difficulty walking.

Devices with more than one seat are not considered mobility scooters.

Ministry of Transport in March accepted Recommendations of the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) on regulations for PMA use.

Concerns are growing that healthy people are abusing PMAs, especially mobility scooters. These include concerns about dangerous driving, speeding and oversized PMAs.

Recommendations planned to be implemented next year include “allowing only certified users with relevant medical needs or walking difficulties to use mobility scooters and providing these users with continuous and adequate access to public spaces.”

The speed limit of all PMAs will also be reduced to 6 km/h, which is the typical walking speed.

The new rules will come into force around 2025.
