Trump says Mexican president agrees to ‘stop’ immigration to US after tariff threat

US President-elect Donald Trump said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to “stop” immigration to the US on Wednesday, and was quick to publicly downplay the claim.

Both sides described their calls as positive after Trump threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Mexico on Monday, prompting warnings of retaliation from the Mexican government.

“We had a great conversation with the new president of Mexico,” Trump said on the Truth Social platform.

“He agreed to stop immigration into the United States through Mexico by effectively closing our Southern Border,” he said, hinting at a change in policy.

Sheinbaum quickly responded to Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that Mexico had announced its current “comprehensive strategy” on immigration.
