A Magistrates Court sitting in Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, sentenced the driver, Mr. Kazeem Abdullahi, to one month imprisonment for assaulting patrol officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while in the execution of their lawful duty on Oye-Ifaki road. Ekiti State.

Mr. Kazeem was arraigned on a standalone charge under Section 187 of the Criminal Code of Ekiti State 2021, before Senior Magistrate Salau ME of the Oye Ekiti Magistrate Court, with case file MOY/15C/2024; law enforcement officer.

Delivering the verdict, the Pope found the accused guilty but sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment or a fine of ₦5,000 in lieu of imprisonment, considering that Kazeem was the first offender among his dependents and that he had apologized to the FRSC.

The culprit was accused along with the first accused, Alhaji Dauda, ​​who was presumed innocent and was therefore discharged and acquitted.

The incident, which occurred on April 22, 2024, was first brought before the Convention on May 9, 2024, when the defendant pleaded not guilty. The case saw further hearings before it was finally adjourned on 14 October 2024, when the verdict was announced.

The two accused, Mr Kazeem Abdullahi, who was a passenger, and Alhaji Dauda, ​​the driver of the motorbike, were stopped at the FRSC patrol post after Kazeem behaved provocatively and attacked personnel on duty.

The driver, who was caught on charges of overloading people and riding a motorcycle without a helmet, went crazy when one of the passengers he was carrying started attacking the uniformed police chief who detained him.

Reacting to the verdict, Federal Road Safety Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the judiciary for the speedy dispensation of justice and stated that it, like other verdicts, is a strong warning to the perpetrators of such acts. Members of the public who attack a public official on duty will be forgiven, no matter how minor the incident.

While the Corps Marshal lamented the repeated attacks on FRSC personnel, often resulting in the loss of life of patrolmen on highways, he warned the motoring community, especially stubborn individuals who make a habit of attacking security institutions, to desist from such actions or face the full wrath of the United States. law.
