The Boys showrunner "didn't design it to reflect reality" but the world went crazy and started "reflecting the show"

The Boys has held up a mirror to the world for four seasons so far, but the showrunner says the superhero adaptation wasn’t designed to be this politically topical. On the contrary, the real world is starting to look more and more like the TV series.

Showrunner Eric Kripke and Amazon Prime Video first began developing the 2006 comic book series into a streaming show in 2019, at which point the series has vacillated between a violent take on Justice League and a loose takedown of unchecked capitalism. But as the episodes progressed, The Boys began to delve deeper into overt political commentary.

To talk DiversityKripke explains that the series doesn’t exactly try to “reflect reality.” Reality has become so crazy it could be mistaken for an episode of The Boys.

“The way the show reflects everything that’s going on in the world comes from this understanding that we came up with very early in the process, which is that this is a television show based on a comic book,” says Kripke. “It’s not like we designed this to reflect reality, but we’re making a show about violent authoritarians who are presented as celebrities. Then suddenly, the world changed to reflect the show, not just in America but around the world. Suddenly we found ourselves making one of the most topical shows on television.”

Over time, this coincidence became increasingly intentional. Kripke says the team eventually felt compelled to “say, ‘Let’s make a show that’s really topical, let’s make it reflect reality, and let’s let it address reality as satirically as possible.’
