Kellie B. Campbell: Now is the time to support women and girls

This comment was made by Kellie B. Campbell of Georgia, member of the Vermont Women’s Commission.

For many people, the days following the election stir up many different emotions. Regardless of your position on the outcome, it’s important to ask: Was America ready for a woman to lead our nation? Most of the country believes no, and unfortunately we are not surprised.

This has been our normal since 1872, when Victoria Woodhull ran for president, and our history has not changed since then. We have been, are, and are concerned that we will continue to face too many inequitable experiences that will continue to maintain that classic and infuriating glass for women and girls (cis and trans women and girls, as well as those who identify as non-binary). ceiling. Let’s say this clearly for women who want to lead: You deserve it. Now is also the time to get involved to support change.

The Vermont Commission on Women is an independent, nonpartisan state government commission that works to advance the rights and opportunities of women and girls in Vermont. The simple truth is that today, even after years of progress filled with unfortunate setbacks, women still face disproportionate inequities in the workplace, in our communities, in our nation, and around the world.

The commission works collaboratively with advisory partners to address gender equity issues across the state to support all Vermonters. Whether you’re ready to take action now or need time to process the full range of valid emotions, there are always ways to get involved and support women and girls affected by gender oppression.

When you visit women.vermont.govYou’ll find a wealth of resources, research, publications, and information about partners joining us in this work from across our state. Join us by sharing your stories, attending our meetings, joining one of our working committees, helping to monitor and support legislative policy, or volunteering and joining our advisory organizations. No step forward is too small, and we invite a broad and diverse range of individuals to join us.

This job requires a lot. Let our male colleagues and community members be the drivers of change. Let our workplace and community partners call out specific inequities and lead change. Let’s encourage diverse leaders by supporting our youth to see a path forward for everyone.

Let our communities defend the places that serve and welcome us all. Let’s make an invitation by looking around our tables and noticing who is not there. Let’s seek out different voices, bring new perspectives, and challenge our thoughts with the desire to better understand each other.

The understanding that is at the core and always at the center of our work is that as women develop, our societies will also develop. Join us in this action and See how to join our website. We look forward to collaborative work that will make Vermont and beyond a better place for everyone.
