State's first LGBTQ-run cafe opens in Jodhpur

Jodhpur: A non-profit organization working for the empowerment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals, a LGBTQ-run cafe The Walled City here is said to be the first in the province.

Acknowledging these concerns, the foundation’s founder and the initiative’s architect, Govind Singh, said that attracting local and domestic customers to the cafe presented challenges, but international visitors showed significant support. This initiative forms part of the ‘Garima’ project, a pioneering initiative of the state that aims to support transgender people and people of different gender orientations, focusing on their dignity and self-worth.
“The cafe is a symbol of courage and recognition. It serves as a space for meaningful employment, self-expression and community connection,” Singh said. he said. He added: “The team bears full responsibility for day-to-day operations and achieving business success through enhanced entrepreneurial capabilities and service excellence.”
Singh explained that community members initially showed reluctance when presented with the responsibility. “We were hesitant earlier but sir (Singh) convinced us. Now we have a sense of pride as he gave us the opportunity to realize our existence and power. This is now directly linked to our self-esteem. Singh said this initiative aims to create opportunities for historically marginalized individuals and transform the narrative.
