Moped driver killed after being hit by car on Kapiolani Boulevard

A motorcyclist was killed when he was struck by a turning car on Kapiolani Boulevard Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said paramedics responded to the call at 5:55 p.m. and treated a man, possibly in his 30s, who was struck by a vehicle on Kapiolani Boulevard near Kaheka Street.

EMS said the man was seriously injured and paramedics “continued advanced emergency medical treatment en route to the emergency room.” The person, whose condition was critical, was taken to the hospital and it was announced that he died.

Honolulu police said the driver of the moped, who was not immediately identified, was traveling eastbound on Kapiolani Boulevard when he was sideswiped by a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old woman who was traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard and attempted to turn left onto Mahukona. Street. The moped driver was thrown onto the road.

Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division, speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the incident.

This was the 43rd traffic death on Oahu so far this year, compared to 51 deaths during the same period in 2023.
