Murder of Enugu musician: Killer cop dismissed from police, sent to prison

Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was involved in the murder of Ogene musician, Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, has been dismissed from the Nigerian Police Force.

An update provided by police on Monday said the officer was found guilty and was immediately dismissed.

The update was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.

He said, “The Enugu State Police Command informs the public of the conclusion of the regular chamber hearing of Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was involved in the murder of Ogene musician, Chikezie Okezie Nwamba. The Inspector was found guilty and received the maximum penalty of dismissal, followed by prosecution in court under the Police Act and the 2020 Regulations.” was started.

“Accordingly, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Zone 13 (covering Anambra and Enugu States Commands) has approved the regular trial recommendations that the Inspector be removed from office and tried in court.

“He was therefore dismissed from the Nigerian Police Force and arraigned today, October 28, 2024, at the Enugu East Magistrates Court on the charge of murder.

“The Chief Justice ordered that the former officer be remanded in Enugu Correctional Institution and the case file be forwarded to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further judicial proceedings. The hearing is adjourned to 12 November 2024.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, once again expresses his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased and expresses his gratitude to the government, the people of Enugu State and the public for their support throughout the case.

“CP Kanayo reiterated that the Nigerian Police Force remains a disciplined government institution and assured that under his leadership, the Command will continue to hold all erring officers accountable for their actions.”
