More Snow Coming With Major Wyoming Fires…

A new burst of snow is expected on the Elk and Pack Trail fires, even as incident management teams report they are close to containing a pair of wildfires that have burned nearly 190,000 acres in Northern Wyoming.

With forecasts for snowfall to begin Monday night at higher elevations and continue through Wednesday, this will only “assist our firefighters in the field,” said Nick Ostrom, operations section chief for Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 in charge. from fighting fires.

This comes as approximately 450 firefighters and support personnel are making rapid progress in containing the Elk Fire.

As of Monday, 82% of the 98,352-acre fire was under control. 73% reported on Saturday and 28% before a strong winter system dumps rain and snow on the Elk Fire on October 17-18.

Ostrom said Monday that crews “had a great day on the fire yesterday.” “No head has been detected in our firing lines for several days. “We also brought the center of the fire under more control.”

In fact, the updated map of the fire shows only two areas out of control: along the northwest boundary and southeast of the Soldier Creek area.

Solider Creek is where some fire activity occurred Sunday, Ostrom said.

“We immediately moved in with our helicopters and took it down,” he said, and now “it looks really safe.”

Ostrom said that with the limitation comes greater efforts to repair areas damaged by firefighting activities.

Meanwhile, similar progress was reported Monday on the Pack Trail fire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest west of Dubois.

This fire burned 89,930 acres and 78% was contained.

Like their counterparts in the Bighorn Mountains, Pack Trail crews clean and transport equipment.
