Chicago shooting: Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi charged after shooting at CPD in West Rogers Park, wounding Jewish man, police say ald. to say

CHICAGO (Wales) — A 22-year-old Chicago man has been charged after allegedly shooting a 39-year-old Jewish man and shooting at first responders on the North Side over the weekend, police and a city councilman said.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer or firefighter and aggravated battery, Chicago police said Monday.

Abdallahi was arrested at 10 a.m. Saturday in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, police said.

He was identified as a suspect less than 30 minutes ago. He shot a 39-year-old Jew in the 2600 block of West Farwell Boulevard in West Rogers Park, police said.

Police had previously said the man was walking in the area when Abdullahi approached him from behind, then shot him in the shoulder without saying a word.

The man was treated and released.

Abdullahi then escaped. He then walked out of an alley and fired at police, police said.

According to CPD, Abdallahi fired repeatedly at responding officers and paramedics from various locations for approximately two minutes.

The doorbell camera captured part of the confrontation, which spanned blocks.

Police shot Abdullahi multiple times. He was critically injured and remained treated at a local hospital Monday.

First responders were not injured.

Police said a gun was seized at the scene.

The man who was shot was Jewish and was walking to the synagogue on Shabbat, 50th Ward alderman Debra L. Silverstein said in a letter to residents.

“Specifically, authorities did not file hate crime charges despite evidence suggesting the attack had an anti-Semitic motivation,” Silverstein said. “I am deeply disappointed in this turn of events and urge the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to prosecute the criminal to the fullest extent of the law.”

Silverstein said police told him they were continuing to gather evidence and more charges could be added.

He said CPD took the incident seriously.

On Sunday, a meeting was held between Jewish Rabbis and community leaders and Investigator Larry Snelling and the police leadership team to discuss the shooting.

“The police share their disgust that a Jewish man was subjected to violence during Jewish holidays,” Silverstein said. “They are committed to devoting the necessary resources to keep our community safe and are asking for the public’s assistance in providing any information or footage that may assist in the investigation. The safety of our community is my top priority. I will continue as always to ensure the residents of Ward 50 are safe and protected. Working closely with Snelling and local law enforcement.”

Snelling, Silverstein and other police leaders announced the charges at a news conference Monday afternoon.

CPD said they were still investigating the cause of the incident and were unable to interview the suspect while he was being treated at the hospital.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the police shooting and the officers involved have been assigned to routine administrative duties.

CPD initially said Abdullahi was 23 years old.

He will appear in court on Tuesday.

CPD said there was no threat to the Jewish community.
