Firefighters from Quebec, New York respond to help crews on the Hawthorne fire

BERLIN, CT (WFSB) – The Hawthorne fire on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin has been burning for more than a week.

The state remained under a state of emergency on Tuesday due to dry conditions and lack of rainfall.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection warned residents to be wary of potential sources of fire ignition.

The teams continued their work on Ağrı Mountain, where 120 to 130 decares of land burned.

Over the past week, DEEP has had to battle numerous fires across the state.

Additional crews were brought in from out of state to assist local firefighters and combat flare-ups around Connecticut.

A 20-person crew from Quebec and 15 members from the New York City Fire Department helped fight the Hawthorne fire.

Firefighters in Berlin expected to battle the blaze for at least two more weeks.

DEEP implemented the outdoor burning ban in response to fires like the one in Berlin.

Residents should avoid disposing of smoking materials, participating in ATV and UTV activities, using outdoor grills, lighting campfires, and operating sparking appliances.

DEEP said it’s important to remember that the vast majority of wildfires in Connecticut are caused by human activity.

Fire officials stated that the likely cause of the fire in Berlin was a reignited campfire.

Those who encountered the fire were asked to call 911 immediately.
