San Francisco Chronicle Ward’s and Cook’s parenting journey earlier this year began with the fear they experienced after learning their baby had Down syndrome after a blood test and a heart defect was detected on an ultrasound.

Ward was optimistic in this situation and told Cook that she would be a beautiful girl and that they would love and care for her no matter what.

Amani underwent open-heart surgery 10 months after she was born, and Ward admitted that seeing her baby cheered her up as she tucked him in at night.
