On Tuesday evening, the entire province of Valencia, with a population of 5.5 million, was told to avoid travel.

A high-speed train carrying 276 passengers derailed in the southern region of Andalusia, but no one was injured, the regional government said.

Emergency services also rescued scores of people by helicopter after a river overflowed its banks in Alora, Andalusia.

Spain’s weather agency AEMET declared a red alert in the eastern Valencia region and the second-highest alert level in parts of southern Andalusia.
