One person died in conflict and tension with police in Saraland

SARALAND, Ala. (WALA) – A police chase led to a shooting and a shootout on Ideal Drive at Shelton Beach Road in Saraland this morning, according to the Mobile Sheriff’s Office.

The Internet Crimes Against Children unit and the Special Operations unit searched for Juan Jose Puente Jr., according to Sheriff Paul Burch. Tried to obtain an arrest warrant for child pornography.

Sheriff Burch said the unit conducted a traffic stop on Puente on Shelton Beach Road when they observed a handgun. Deputies said they tried to attack Puente, but he quickly walked away. Deputies also performed a pit maneuver to stall Puente, Burch said.

According to officials, Puente managed to recover after the pit maneuver and fired several shots at deputies. Deputies returned fire until the man entered his home, according to Sheriff Burch.

The person barricaded himself in the house. According to Sheriff Burch, deputies attempted to communicate with Puente, but negotiations were unsuccessful when he began shooting at law enforcement officers, who then returned fire. He states that more than 100 bullets were fired during the exchange.

It was announced that the person involved in the conflict lost his life.
