Seven students from Sacred Heart Teachers College and an outsider were arrested and charged by the police and detained at Boroko Police Station for having sexual intercourse with a female student outside a residential area near the school on October 20, 2024.

NCD Acting Metropolitan Inspector Mazuc Rubiang confirmed that seven students and the other man have been charged and are currently being detained in solitary confinement. A police report said the students, mostly from the Western Highlands, one from Enga and the other from the settlement, were allegedly drinking after their cultural performance at the school in the early morning hours of the incident. morning.

He added that the report stated that seven students from Western Highlands were attending first, second and third year respectively and another first year student from Enga who was attending university dropped out after the cultural demonstration. He said that after six male students and other men in the compound had sexual intercourse with the female student, the students went out of the school to get some alcohol.

He said the 20-year-old girl, who was with two other girls, was picked up by one of the perpetrators who was looking for the victim and told him he was going to the school in a taxi to pick them up.

“While he was at school, he called the victim and said he would pick her and two other girls up so they could go out and have a few drinks outside school. He arrived at the school at 5pm and picked up the girls. Rubiang said the other two boys left the school and drove to a nearby settlement identified as Bomana Turn Off. He said they were drinking alcohol from there when the incident occurred.

He said that while they were enjoying their alcohol, a lady who wanted to use the toilet asked the victim if she could accompany her to go to the toilet. Later, as he was returning, a man came from behind and pulled the victim. One of the students’ perpetrators managed to drive Engan away when he executed the only Engan in the Western Highlands boys’ group. The children walked after him, grabbed him and pushed him to the ground.

Supt Rubiang said that because the man was so strong, he overpowered the weak girl and tried to call his friends for help. The boy’s mouth was covered as he pushed him, making him too weak to fight back.

He said this when the other seven joined in and began raping her. The victim identified the students by the clothes they were wearing.

Supt Mazuc said that after the incident, one of the perpetrators helped the victim return to school. After going through all this, he was very weak and needed to rest. She later recovered and reported the matter to the school official, who then helped her go to the hospital and then to the Sexual Crimes Bureau office.

“The students were identified by the school administration and brought to the police station. They were later warned and charged and are currently being detained in solitary confinement. They have all been charged with rape under Article 347 (1) of the Criminal Code Act. Rubiang is in question.

“I would also like to appeal to girls and even women to stop doing so when you go out drinking with a group of boys you are not related to. We have seen an increase in rape, murder and other serious cases, so please avoid going out.” added Rubiang.

She also called on girls and women to be careful who they date and where they go.
