Haircuts 4 Homeless charity turns 10 as homelessness rises

He said he was grateful to “every single one of the volunteers” who had worked with the charity over the last 10 years, but added that “we would all prefer to see homelessness eliminated”.

Haircut 4 Homeless Roberts explained that the charity’s volunteers are taking part in pop-up events at “shelters, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, veterans, ex-convicts, addiction centers and places that serve people struggling with mental health issues.” The charity boss said the haircut had helped people get to job interviews and even allowed them to reconnect with family members.

“A haircut can have an incredible impact because it’s not just about appearance; it’s about restoring dignity and self-esteem,” Roberts told the Big Issue.

“Many people experiencing homelessness feel invisible, disconnected from society. When someone takes the time to provide them with a service such as a haircut, it is an act of care and respect. “We’ve seen that a haircut can boost self-confidence, helping people feel like themselves again… It’s a small gesture, but it can change how someone sees themselves and how the world sees them.”

Roberts explained that many of the stories he hears every day from people experiencing homelessness “moved me deeply,” especially from a client named Anne whose birthday was catered by the charity. .

“I went over to talk to her and found out it was going to be her birthday soon, so we offered her a nice makeover,” she said. “The women we see who are victims of domestic violence are something that concerns me very closely; it’s amazing to see that when we treat them, they can feel like they’ve regained some dignity.”

Roberts said the charity is needed more than ever because “the cost of living crisis, rising rentsand economic instability has driven more people into homelessness than we have seen in years.”

“The need is great, but together, we can continue to offer hope and dignity to those who need it most.”
