Welsh museum closes ahead of £21m project

Welsh museum closes ahead of £21m project

The National Slate Museum is closing its doors today ahead of reconstruction.

The project, which will take approximately 2 years and cost £21 million, will bring a “new breath” to the much-loved museum.

Grade 1 buildings will be maintained and refurbished and the visitor experience will be enhanced with new playgrounds, learning centres, a shop and café.

A significant portion of the funding was provided through partnerships with Cyngor Gwynedd As part of the Llewyrch o’r Llechi project, Welsh Government, National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders.

The National Slate Museum is used as a base for the locomotives that work on it. Llanberis Lake Railway Hunslet ‘Una’ has become a dominant feature in the museum over the years.

The museum is expected to go ‘on the road’ and visit various locations in 2025, which will be confirmed soon.

The museum is expected to reopen in 2026

We are delighted to see the redevelopment of Amgueddfa Lechi Cymru moving to the next stage. This is a flagship development for the Llewyrch o’r Llechi project, managed and financed by Cyngor Gwynedd. UK GovernmentIt will make the museum the headquarters of the Northwest Slate Landscape Wales World Heritage Site.
