Norwich woman sent Titanic postcard to go under the hammer

Mr Aldridge said he expected the vehicle to sell for between £6,000 and £10,000.

“It will appeal to two different kinds of people: Titanic experts, of course, but also stamp collectors who love postmarks. This one, dated ‘Cork 15.45, 11 April 1912’, is extremely rare.”

The letters written in swirling ink are a bit vague, but the card appears to be addressed to Miss Olive Dakin, 2 Albemarle Place, Newmarket Road, Norwich.

There’s definitely still an Albemarle House on that street.

John Balls, president of the Norfolk Titanic Society and author of two books about the tragedy, said he remembered the postcard being offered for sale in the 1990s.

“There was a lot of interest then and I hope there will be this time too,” he said.

“And of course, the publicity surrounding the sale may have encouraged relatives of the woman with the Norwich address to also come forward.”

Henry Aldridge & Son specializes in Titanic memorabilia and holds auctions twice a year.

In April he sold the gold pocket watch worn by the ship’s richest passenger for £900,000, six times the asking price.
