PREVIEW: Red Wings meet Blackhawks in Chicago on Wednesday

“Any team can win on any given night,” Joe Veleno said. “The opponent doesn’t matter. We’ve got to have the same mentality and game plan. Two Original Six matchups (on this trip). I’m pretty excited to be a part of it, but we’ve got a Chicago team that’s won a few games lately. Toronto, we know what their star power is like. Just We have to be ready to go.”

Detroit looks to build on Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabers. Captain Dylan Larkin provided the offense, scoring twice on the power play in his first multi-point game of the season, and goaltender Cam Talbot turned away 31 shots to help the Red Wings snap their three-game winning streak.

“We did a lot of good things defensively,” Veleno said. “It’s just about getting into the tougher areas a little bit more offensively, making it harder on the goalkeepers, getting in their eyes and their bodies in front of the net. Defensively, I think we did a lot of good things by protecting home and not giving them too many Grade A chances inside. “Offensively, of course, a little bit. We can do more.”

In addition to Talbot starting between the pipes on Wednesday, the Red Wings will likely wear the same lineup they used against the Sabers, according to head coach Derek Lalonde.

“We are leaning towards the same six (defensive players),” Lalonde said. “Again, I’m very comfortable with all seven. “Maybe there will be some rhythm and opportunity after a pretty good team win (on Saturday).”

Patrick Kane, who spent his first 16 NHL seasons with the Blackhawks, said he is excited to return to Chicago.

“There are so many great memories and incredible moments,” Kane said. “Great friends and relationships were formed. It seems like just yesterday you were drafted into the military. The city was very challenging for me at first, especially as an 18-year-old kid. What we built there was incredible. “There are so many great memories and it will always be fun to go back.”
