Sir John Nott, who was defense minister during the Falklands War in 1982, has died aged 92.

Sir John twice tried to resign from Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet but she refused to accept it.

As well as fighting, he was also known for storming out of an interview with broadcaster Sir Robin Day in 1982.

While being quizzed on defense spending, Sir Robin lost his temper when he asked why people should listen to “a politician who is here today and gone tomorrow, so to speak” rather than senior Royal Navy chiefs pushing for more cash.

A disgraceful interview

Sir John had clashed with the military over spending plans, particularly cuts to the Navy.

The MP stood up, took out his microphone and said: “I’m sorry. I’m tired of this interview. It’s really ridiculous.”

Sir Robin had concerns that the interview would never be published after the fact.

However, a PA news agency reporter sitting at the interview hurried out and covered the story; thus ensuring that all news outlets in the UK had the news within minutes.

His autobiography was later called “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.”

As well as being a politician, Sir John served in the army and also worked in business.

Daughter Sasha Swire said on social media: “Bless my beloved father John Nott, protector, politician, farmer, me.”
