Chesapeake man sentenced to two life sentences for molesting his 11-year-old relative

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Vernon Brooks, 64, was sentenced to more than two life sentences for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old relative in his care, a release states.

Brooks has 18 convictions for two counts of objective sexual assault on a child under 13, seven counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child under 13, and nine counts of indecent liberties by a guardian.

Judge Marjorie A. Taylor Arrington, who presided over the trial, sentenced the defendant to two life sentences plus 185 years in prison, with 178 of those years suspended; as a result, he was sentenced to 2 life sentences plus seven years of active confinement at the Virginia Department of Corrections.

This case stems from a series of attacks that took place over several months in 2018. During this time, the defendant was living with the 11-year-old victim and was in a supervisory or caregiver role. At the hearing, she told that he invited her to his bedroom many times and that she was sexually assaulted.
