ORIENTAL MINDORO – A motorcycle driver, who received a warning for violation, suddenly opened fire at the LTO checkpoint.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) established a checkpoint in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, on Thursday morning (November 7, 2024). One person died and two people were injured when a motorcycle driver, who received a warning ticket for violation, suddenly opened fire on the authorities.

The shooter, a 44-year-old man, was initially stopped by LTO personnel due to multiple vehicle issues and a lack of proper documentation, including a driver’s license. According to Calapan police chief Lt. Col. Roden Fulache, the checkpoint stop turned into an argument between the motorcyclist and LTO officials.

In the middle of the argument, the motorcycle driver unexpectedly pulled his gun and started shooting. Caught in the crossfire was 85-year-old former barangay captain Angeles Marasigan, who was at a nearby local store.

Unfortunately, he died as a result of being hit by a bullet. A bystander and LTO employee Gerardo Garcia were injured in the incident. Despite the efforts of the authorities to follow the suspect with a hot pursuit operation, the suspect managed to escape.

However, the motorcycle used in the incident was later found abandoned in Barangay Malamig. At the scene, investigators also found multiple 9mm shell casings, possibly from the suspect’s gun.

The incident raised concerns for the safety of both LTO personnel and the public at checkpoints. It also highlights the importance of complying with traffic and vehicle regulations to prevent incidents from escalating into violent encounters.

Police continue to search for the suspect in order to provide justice to the victims and ensure the safety of the society.
