Fisherman admits guilt in fatal stabbing in Meten-Meer-Zorg, 2019

Ramesh Ramdeen, 25, a fisherman from Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD), pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the murder of 19-year-old Noel Singh.

Originally charged with capital murder, Ramdeen accepted a plea deal to a lesser charge before Judge Jo Ann Barlow. He will be sentenced by Demerara High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow on November 21, 2024. The presiding judge adjourned sentencing until a later date to allow for the preparation of a probation report on Ramdeen, victim impact statements from the deceased’s family and other relevant reports that would help determine a fair sentence.
Ramdeen, represented by attorney Kiswana Jefford, faces the charge stemming from the October 20, 2019 incident. Ramdeen, also known as “Braffy”, launched a violent attack on Singh, stabbing him multiple times, including in the chest, according to state prosecutors Praneta Seeraj, Mikel Puran and Rbina Christmas. Ramdeen then pushed Singh into a ditch outside his home at Lot 33 in Meten-Meer-Zorg. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Singh in the gutter and calling for emergency help, but his injuries proved fatal.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Leonora Cottage Hospital.
Ramdeen was arrested two days later in Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). Autopsy confirmed that Singh’s death was due to perforation of the heart due to stab wounds.
