Last week I told everyone we would find the person responsible, and we did. I am proud of the hard work my detectives and forensics team did to quickly bring this case to a conclusion. This kind of unimaginable violence still shocks me, even after all my years in law enforcement. The Reddick community has shown their resilience and support for us and their community through it all. In this case, I would also like to thank all the citizens who sent tips and provided guidance. It was shocking that anyone would do such an act to a 91-year-old, but it is truly disturbing to see the young age of the prisoner. While I firmly believe that he should be held accountable for his crime, as a father, I extend my sympathy to his family. We hope that his arrest will lead to the provision of assistance that will prevent the continuation of such actions.

The sheriff’s office said the victim’s neighbor provided videos of Stone to law enforcement, according to the Tampa-based news outlet. NBC affiliate WFLA. Later, the neighbor saw the young man riding his bike wearing the same clothes he wore on the night of the attack.

Investigators said they used DNA evidence and rape kit results to confirm that Stone was in fact the culprit responsible for the crime.

“It’s a very rigorous and arduous process, but a lot of agencies don’t have that resource,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Paul Bloom told the TV station. “A lot of their DNA is sent and the results take a long time. We don’t want that. We don’t want to spend time there for this person to have the potential to attack another victim.”

Later, in an interview with law enforcement, Stone allegedly admitted to breaking into, punching and groping the woman.

The teen was charged as an adult with sexual assault of a victim over 12 by a person under 18 and burglary of a person’s residence. batterycourt records show.

He initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea on Nov. 7 before Fifth Judicial Circuit Judge Lisa Herndon.

Stone’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 19.
