Enzo Maresca warned Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez ‘not suitable’ Premier League‘ by former Blues defender William Gallas.

Fernandez, who signed for 105 million pounds, The most expensive transfer in English football When he swapped Benfica for Chelsea in January 2023.

The 23-year-old player, who plays for Argentina, which won the World Cup in 2022, demonstrated his potential but often failed to reach the heights expected from him during his time at Stamford Bridge.

With Maresca showing signs of becoming a consistent starter in the starting XI, Fernandez found himself behind Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in the pecking order and has not started a league match since the beginning of October.

Earlier in the month, Maresca, Caiceo and Lavia partnership Gives Blues better ‘balance’ in midfieldbut suggested the Argentinian would still play a vital role in his plans as the season progresses.

‘The Premier League is not for everyone, we know that. We know this isn’t for everyone. He needs to improve his fitness. He needs to do more; He needs to run more. He also needs to be more consistent.

‘That’s why the position he plays is so difficult. What do we want him to do? Getting some assists, scoring goals, playing almost box to box.

‘Can he do this? I don’t know if he can actually play box to box. ‘He either needs to start scoring goals or making assists.’

Gallas continued: ‘I think it will be a bit difficult for Enzo to regain a place in Chelsea’s midfield this season.

‘He will get opportunities off the bench, he had opportunities against Manchester United and even if he plays 15 or 20 more minutes, he needs to show his quality.

‘He had the opportunity to score the game-winning second goal for Chelsea against Man Utd. So there will be moments for him and he needs to take them.

‘He was vice-captain and is now on the bench. He knows he has to do more and the other players know they have to keep performing to keep their place in the team.’

Gallas isn’t the only one with reservations about Fernendez’s potential in a Chelsea shirt; Graeme Souness insists the midfielder will never reach the level the club hopes for.

“I think there will be a tremendous waste of players in the current squad and most of them will never reach the levels people think they will,” he said. Three in Front podcast.

The most obvious one to me is someone who isn’t even in the team at the moment, Enzo Fernandez, who they spent £105 million on. ‘They bought a lot of players who wouldn’t reach the level they hoped for.’

Despite the dip in form, it may be difficult for Chelsea to sign Fernandez, given he earns £180,000 a week and has a contract running until 2032.

Barcelona and Inter Milan There was interest in the midfielder but initial reports suggest he is still happy at Stamford Bridge and wants to fight for his place in the first team.
