Two people face capital murder charges in death at southeast Garland apartment

Two Mesquite residents are facing death penalty charges in the death of 53-year-old Johnny Mac Ross Jr., whose body they found wrapped in sheet-like material early Monday, Garland police said.

Police arrested 20-year-old Haley Barber and 20-year-old Leo Moore in connection with the case, according to a press release Tuesday. They are currently detained at the Garland Detention Center and have not been assigned an attorney.

Police intervened around 01:00 on Monday. a report about a death at an apartment in the 4500 block of Chaha Road where they said they saw signs of foul play.

Police said Tuesday that an early investigation showed the victim died from a stab wound.

Police also said they discovered one of the victim’s vehicles had been stolen from the residence and located him driving on Miller Road near LBJ Highway around 1 p.m. Monday.

Barber and Moore then tried to flee on foot in the stolen vehicle but were unsuccessful, according to the statement.

Police later said they gathered more evidence showing Barber and Moore knew Ross and were responsible for her death, but the investigation was still ongoing.
