Documentary screening – The Hindu

Department of English, Government College of Arts, Thiruvananthapuram organized a screening of the award-winning documentary in collaboration with Gender Justice Forum Saving Walden’s World It was chaired by Jim Merkel on Friday.

The screening was held within the scope of a four-year undergraduate program. According to the statement, the documentary unites the interconnected fields of women’s empowerment, organic farming and community-focused initiatives to create a more sustainable future.

Filmmaker and activist Jim Merkel’s personal journey from military subcontracting to advocating non-capitalist solutions forms the basis of the documentary. Throughout this story, the documentary maps out a journey to three places, including Kerala, Cuba and Slovenia, where women-led communities are reimagining society. There was interaction with the director and students at the event.

“They’re not just trying to survive; They thrive through empowerment, collaboration and sustainable living. What is remarkable is that these communities do this outside the traditional capitalist model and show us that there is more than one way to develop,” Mr. Merkel said.
