Man who stabbed girlfriend in Lime Acres sentenced to 8 years in prison

The Danielskuil District Court this week sentenced a 25-year-old man to eight years in prison for the attempted murder of his girlfriend, whom he stabbed multiple times.

DANIELSKUIL District Court this week found 25-year-old Thabiso Maphala guilty of attempting to murder his girlfriend and sentenced him to eight years in prison.

Two years of this sentence are suspended for five years, provided that no one is convicted of attempted murder during the suspension period. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Northern Cape police spokesman Sergeant Molefi Shemane said Maphala was sentenced on November 13 for stabbing his girlfriend Iris Letsebe, 22, four times at Finsch Hostels in Lime Acres on November 20, 2023.

ZF Mgcawu district acting commissioner Brigadier Peet Coetzee praised investigating officer Detective Sergeant Zamubuntu Ngebulani and prosecutor Kenneth Motsatsi for their joint efforts to ensure justice for the victim of gender-based violence.

Sergeant Shemane said SAPS was urging the public to report criminal activity by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or using the MySAPS app. For extortion-related crimes, reports can be made to the extortion hotline on 0800 911 011, the official said. All information provided will be treated confidentially, he said.

Police are also encouraging community members to take part in the “Rate Our Service” online survey to help SAPS improve its service to the public.
