Avon teenager returns home after weeks of recovery following hit-and-run crash

AVON, CT (WFSB) – After spending weeks in the hospital and recovering at a rehab center in Chicago, 15-year-old Liam Shields is finally back home in Avon.

His return was a significant turning point in his recovery after his death. Last month, he was hit by a hit-and-run driver while cycling.

Liam’s return home was met with applause from friends and family who rallied behind him throughout his difficult journey.

The sophomore was all smiles as she hugged her loved ones, grateful for the support she was receiving.

“It feels good. Thank you to everyone who helped me,” said Liam, visibly emotional as he was welcomed back by the community.

Liam’s mother, Andrea Shields, spoke proudly of her son’s progress. “Liam has come a long way,” he said. “With each passing day reaching another milestone brought me a sense of relief and hope.”

The 15-year-old’s road to recovery hasn’t been easy.

After the accident, Liam remained in medical care for six weeks, including a period of medically induced coma. But thanks to his hard work and the encouragement of his friends, teammates and family, he has made significant progress.

“When he woke up from his medically induced coma and heard from his friends, I think that’s what gave him hope and desire to get better,” said Andrea, who wore a “Shields Strong” T-shirt to support her son. “To have them here today, high-fiving each other and hugging each other, is the best feeling for a parent.”

Although Liam still has a long road ahead of him, including continuing therapy in Connecticut, he is excited to return to school and spend more time with his twin brother and their dog.

“At the end of the day, that is what defines community and we are truly grateful to live here in Avon,” said Andrea, grateful for the support her family has received.

Meanwhile, the driver accused of hitting Liam and fleeing the scene is facing multiple charges.

He is expected to appear in court again on December 19, and authorities say they will continue to keep the community informed about the case.
