SHAWANO COUNTY, Wisconsin (WBAY) – 911 dispatchers never know what the next call will be, but last week the Shawano County dispatch center received a very unexpected call for help.

A 10-year-old boy said he needed help with his math homework because, as he noted, his family “wasn’t very good at math either.”

Deputy Chase Mason responded to the 911 call. “I’m also not very adept when it comes to math, but I responded anyway to help,” the deputy said in a Facebook post.

With the help of the surrogate, the child was able to solve his homework on decimals.

In another teaching moment, Deputy Mason explained that the sheriff’s office was ready to help, but the emergency line was life-threatening. He advised the boy to use the non-emergency number for other calls and gave him his business card.
