Sarnia man facing armed robbery charges jailed twice this year

A Sarnia man arrested last weekend on a long list of charges tied to armed robbery and a stolen pickup truck has already been sentenced to two prison terms this year; One of these is linked to an incident in which a couple was threatened with a hammer during a wedding. Dan Plain, a 35-year-old Sarnia resident arrested Saturday, faces 26 charges; nine of them are linked to a pickup truck stolen earlier that day and 17 to a robbery about three weeks ago.

Sarnia police said they were called around 8 a.m. Saturday in reference to a 2023 Ford F-150 Tremor stolen from a driveway on Tweedsmuir Boulevard several hours earlier. Officers followed the pickup truck to Murray and Cameron streets in Corunna and saw a man and a woman leaving a home in the 100 block of Cameron Street.

Police said the man was wearing the same clothing seen on surveillance video outside the home on Tweedsmuir Boulevard earlier that morning. Both men were arrested and officers found a butterfly-style knife and the keys to the stolen pickup truck.

Plain, originally from Aamjiwnaang First Nation, was charged with theft of a vehicle, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and seven counts of breaching probation, police said. Tyler Lynn Sweet, 27, who had an outstanding warrant, was also charged with theft valued at less than $5,000, failure to take fingerprints and two counts of probation violation, police said.

On Oct. 25, two disguised men carrying a Glock-style gun and a machete entered a garage on Lansdowne Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. and robbed two people, police previously said. Police said the armed men stole several items, including mobile phones, clothes, computers and gadgets, and fled on a bicycle.

Some of Plain’s charges in this case include two counts of pointing a firearm, breaking and entering with intent, disguise with intent, and robbery.

Plain appeared briefly in a Sarnia courtroom on Wednesday via video link from the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Center in London. He was arrested and his cases were postponed until December 2.

Nearly a year ago, Plain was facing 11 charges, including one count each of armed robbery, assault with a weapon and making threats related to an Oct. 22, 2023, incident on Afton Drive in which a man broke into a home 4 hours later. At 30:00, he threatened two people with a hammer and demanded their valuables. Police reported that there were no injuries in the incident and a suspect was caught a short time later.

Plain pleaded guilty in January only to unlawfully being in a house and carrying a weapon (a hammer) for a dangerous purpose, and the other charges were dropped. He received a 140-day, expired sentence.

At the time the court heard Plain had a lengthy criminal record of 45 previous convictions, many for violence, and drug abuse problems.

A judge raised concerns about Plain’s drug use when he appeared in court again in June and dismissed charges of carrying a concealed weapon (a black tactical-style knife), resisting police, prowling at night, mischief valued at less than $5,000 and two counts of violating probation. agreed. It is linked to events in March and April. He was sentenced to 135 days in prison.

Defense attorney Terry Brandon said his longtime client had good intentions but was triggered by drugs.

“There’s not much I can say, I’m just sorry,” Plain said in June.

Plain was also previously sentenced in September 2023 to nearly six months in prison and ordered to pay approximately $500 in restitution for breaking and entering, burglary and theft, including power tools taken from a north Sarnia construction site.
