How to use Apple Intelligence on Mac

Apple Intelligence is now available on any Mac computer with an Apple M series chip. While it’s not available by default, anyone with a supported Mac can request access, and we know many of you already know all about it. If you have no experience with this (which we assume most of you don’t right now), understanding how to use Apple Intelligence on Mac can be a bit confusing. We’re here to show you the pros and cons.

Editor’s note: To formulate these instructions, we used an Apple MacBook Air M2 running macOS Sequoia 15.1.1. Note that some steps may be slightly different in the future depending on your device and software version. Additionally, more Apple Intelligence features will be added in the future. We will update this post when they do so.

How to sign up for Apple Intelligence?

First things first. As mentioned before, Apple Intelligence is available on all Apple M-series Mac computers, but it is not enabled by default. You must get on a waiting list and join the Apple Intelligence beta. we have one The full guide to joining the Apple Intelligence waitlist is here. You can learn all about the requirements and other details from there.

TL;DR is that you should click on it. apple menuthen go to: System Settings > Apple Intelligence and Siri > Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist.

After that wait; Your Mac will notify you that Apple Intelligence is ready. It usually takes a few hours. I requested access right before going to bed and when I woke up it was ready to go.

Let’s start with Authoring Tools

The first thing you’ll want to try, and probably one of the features you’ll use most often in Apple Intelligence, is Authoring Tools. It basically allows you to highlight text and summarize, correct or rewrite the text. This will work on almost any text in almost any application, whether it’s your own writing or not.

How to use Apple Intelligence Authoring Tools:

  1. Find and highlight any text.
  2. Right-click on the highlighted text. You can also tap with two fingers or use Ctrl + click.
  3. hover over Writing Toolsthen select Show Writing Tools. You’ll also get a set of shortcuts so you can go directly to what you want to do if you want.
  4. You’ll see all the options for what you can do with the highlighted text. These include: Correction, Rewrite, Summary, Highlightsand more.

Notification summaries and decluttering

My Mac notifications can be so cluttered that it’s almost overwhelming to go through them. I usually clean it all up. Apple Intelligence is here to the rescue! It uses artificial intelligence to provide summaries or analyze your notifications and show only the important ones.

How to enable and customize Apple Intelligence notification summaries:

  1. click on apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. To choose Notifications.
  4. Click Summarize previewsand enable Summarize Previews.
  5. Go to the list of apps and select the apps whose previews you want to turn on or off.

How to enable Reduce Interruptions Focus mode:

  1. click on apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Select Focus tab.
  4. Click Reduce Interruptions.
  5. Choose your preferences.
  6. When you’re ready to activate this focus mode, switches click on the option in the upper right corner Focus select and Reduce Interruptions. You can also choose how long to use it.

Try website summaries

Is this website text too long? Sometimes you just want the TL;DR and Apple Intelligence can get that for you. The trick currently only works in Safari, so keep that in mind.

How to summarize a website with Apple Intelligence:

  1. Lunch Safari and go to the website you want to summarize.
  2. Click the page options icon to the left of the URL. Check out the first screenshot below to see what it looks like.
  3. Select Show Reader.
  4. At the top of the page you will see a In summary choice. Choose it.

Siri is powered by artificial intelligence

Siri is now developed by Apple Intelligence. You can ask Siri questions about your Apple products, such as how to do things on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You will now remember recent requests and be able to follow a conversation as you normally would. For example, ask Siri “What is the most popular Mexican food?” You can ask a question like: and the answer will be tacos. Immediately afterwards, “Can you find me the recipe to make these?” you may ask. and will offer options.

You can also now write to Siri. Just activate it on your Mac; A text box will appear. This is useful when you don’t want to speak the specific word or commands. By default, you can turn on Siri by saying “Siri,” “Hey Siri,” or by pressing the Command key twice.

If you use the Messages app frequently, you’ll also find some Apple Intelligence improvements here. For starters, you’ll see summaries of new messages without entering the chat. They will appear below the conversation in the left pane.

You’ll also be able to use Smart Reply during a conversation. Apple Intelligence will analyze your messages and show suggested replies to eliminate all typing. When suggestions appear, select them and submit.

If you don’t like message digests, you can turn them off by launching Start. Messagesthen i’m going Messages > Settings > General and deselect Summarize messages.

Take advantage of the power of artificial intelligence in the Mail application

Mail is one of the apps where you’ll probably find Apple Intelligence more useful because it has more AI features. For example, when you’re in your inbox, you can click View in the menu bar and select Show Priority. AI will identify which emails are time-sensitive and put them at the top for you.

You can also use Smart Reply when replying to any email. Suggestions will appear in the text field only. Mail will also automatically create summaries of your emails and display them right below. You can also click on any email and select Summarize.

If you don’t like these summaries, you can turn them off by going to: Mail application and navigation Mail > Settings > Display. Deselect Summarize Message Previews.

Use Apple Intelligence to edit images in Photos

The Photos app also has a few really nice improvements with Apple Intelligence. AI can help you find images, for example, by writing a description of what the photo depicts. When you open the Photos app, simply enter the description of the photo you want to find. For example, I used “photo of ring on hand” and this is what I got:

You can also leverage the power of artificial intelligence to remove potentially distracting parts of an image.

How to remove distractions from photos using Apple Intelligence:

  1. start Photos APPLICATION.
  2. Open the image you want to edit.
  3. Click To organise.
  4. Choose from the options above clean up.
  5. Click and hold on the item you want to remove, then highlight it completely.
  6. Let Apple Intelligence work its magic! It will eliminate distractions and try to create a suitable background.
  7. Hot Complete When… it’s over.

FAQ

Apple Intelligence is only available on Mac computers with an M-series processor (i.e. M1 or later). It also requires at least macOS 15.1 and you need to: sign up for this.

All currently announced Apple Intelligence features are expected to be available around March 2025.

The time to access Apple Intelligence through the waitlist may vary. But it usually takes a few hours. In my case I requested access, went to sleep, and when I woke up it was ready to go.
