New Jersey Institute of Technology student charged with murder for allegedly stabbing and strangling woman, prosecutors say

PARAMUS, New Jersey (WABC) — A New Jersey Institute of Technology student has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed a woman Thursday, Bergen County prosecutors said.

Kishan Sheth, 21, is accused of killing 74-year-old Rita Acharya at her Paramus home on Nov. 18.

Investigators said Paramus police went to check on Acharya’s well-being just before 4:10 p.m. and found him dead on the couch.

Investigation revealed that Sheth was an acquaintance of Acharya. They say that after killing Acharya, Sheth stole $4,500 from his bank account by stealing his vehicle and debit card and tried to conceal his crimes before fleeing the area.

New Jersey Institute of Technology said in a statement: “We recently learned of a very serious and troubling situation involving Kishan Sheth, who was arrested and accused of committing multiple crimes, including murder, off campus in Bergen County, NJ. Sheth said in an investigation. and placed on temporary suspension pending the outcome of the conduct hearing, this action shall deny him access to campus and suspend his attendance at classes throughout the conduct and disciplinary process.”

Sheth faces several charges, including first-degree murder, first-degree home invasion resulting in serious bodily injury, and second-degree unlawful disturbing, moving or concealing human remains.
