Woman whose mother’s body was found in a wheelbarrow at Foley motel has been charged with murder

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – A Baldwin County grand jury indicted a woman on several charges including murder, abuse of a corpse and trespassing.

According to the indictment, Smith allegedly stabbed and strangled his mother, then wrapped her body in a sheet and hid it from his family.

Investigators said Smith refused to let anyone into the motel room he shared with his mother. According to authorities, a grandchild who found his body inside the room notified the police.

Smith was arrested on Sept. 1, 2023, and charged with abuse of a corpse, trespassing, attempted escape, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to jail records.

The case was assigned to a grand jury on September 28, 2023, and Smith has remained in custody on a $35,000 bail since then. The record shows that a motion to reduce or modify his bond was denied on Nov. 7, 2023.

Smith made a second request to reduce or modify his bond on Oct. 7 of this year and was due in court today, Thursday, Nov. 21, for a hearing on the matter, according to court records.

Smith was indicted on the original charges as well as the murder charge earlier this month, and his bail was increased to $185,000, according to new documents filed on Nov. 20.

His trial will be held in January 2025.
