Michigan State’s Intriguing Quarterback Possesses Breakthrough Performance

The Michigan State Spartans’ offense hasn’t exactly been world-class this season, even though there are some very talented players on the roster.

One player who hasn’t lived up to expectations is tight end Jack Velling.

Velling transferred from Oregon State after last year, and Michigan State appeared to be signing a great quarterback.

In 2023, Velling averaged an impressive 15.1 yards per catch with 29 receptions for 438 yards and eight touchdowns.

In fact, the 22-year-old was so impressive at Oregon State that he was widely viewed as an intriguing player in the NFL Draft heading into 2024.

But things didn’t go so well for Velling in East Lansing this year.

Velling recorded 30 catches for 323 yards through 10 games. That’s a pedestrian average of 10.8 yards per catch and has yet to reach the end zone.

It has definitely shown flashes, but it hasn’t really exploded yet.

Could all this change Friday? Purdue?

The Boilermakers are just 1-9 and have one of the worst pass defenses in the country. They have allowed opposing quarterbacks a 166.1 passing rating this season, which could mean Aidan Chiles and the Michigan State air attack could pick things up early.

Maybe Velling can deliver a signature performance and actually score his first goal of the 2024 season?

It’s important to note that Chiles has been playing better lately, especially in the Spartans’ loss to Illinois last week. This could be the perfect time for Michigan State’s offense to record one of its best performances of the season.

And remember: The Spartans need to win the last two games to bowl. The sense of urgency should be enough for Michigan State to record a breakout performance against bottom-seeded Purdue, and Velling could be a big part of that.

Velling remains a highly-coveted prospect in the NFL Draft due to his physical assets, but a few strong showings to finish the season would go a long way in boosting his stock.
