Mechanic shares big warning sign ‘winter ruins cars’

A top car mechanic has taken to YouTube to warn drivers about one of the most common reasons why so many cars lose value and what owners can do to prevent it.

Because temperatures drop and the weather is rainy, many drivers are less willing to maintain their vehicles during the autumn and winter months.

He explained: “It’s not actually the snowy areas that are causing the cars to rust, because there’s snow on the ground sticking to the cars. No, the problem is that the temperatures drop below freezing and the snow piles up everywhere, causing the water to freeze and become ice rinks. “What happens is you go over this water that has salt in it, and it pressure washes your car with the salt water. It literally eats the car from the inside out. Although new cars are much less susceptible to rust than before, thanks to prevention methods from the factory, many models on the road are at risk of damage.

Rust can be a particular problem on vehicles with damage such as scratches that can expose the metal bodywork to the elements.

If drivers detect any rust on their vehicles, it is vital that they take action as soon as possible to prevent the rust from developing further and potentially requiring a full respray.

To prevent rust from forming in the first place, Ahmed suggested drivers cover the underside of their vehicles as soon as possible and check for rust beforehand.

He advised: “This is bound to happen unless you drive your car from November to April, but there are things you can do to limit the impact of rust and the first of these is to prime the car.”

“Priming is becoming less and less necessary on newer cars, but that’s a really good thing. The best time to prime a car is when it’s brand new and hasn’t seen any salt. If your car already has rust or salt on it and you haven’t washed it, “You can lock it and the rust will start to rust quickly. All the rust needs is oxygen and something to start the process.”

The mechanic also suggested that drivers wash their vehicles regularly during the cold months, as some car washes have the ability to remove salt from the bottom.

He added: “The other thing you want to do is every time there’s salt on the road, go wash your car and wash the underbody. I’m not saying hose it under, not everyone is going to be willing to do that, but some car washes have underbody blasts.”

“Go and wash your car when the temperature is above freezing. The reason I say this is if you wash your car when it’s freezing, all the water will freeze and your doors and trunk won’t want to open.”
