Chaps dominate Bears in UIL 2024 playoffs

Westlake advanced to the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals thanks to its outstanding defensive effort.

The Chaps stifled San Antonio’s Brennan all game long, holding the offense to less than 130 yards; most of which came on a 75-yard halftime pass; A blocked punt led to a short touchdown drive, and he was effective enough on offense. 24-7 victory in the district round play-off match played at Burger Stadium on Friday.

Rees Wise threw for a touchdown and two scores, taking advantage of short fields on all scoring drives to lead the Chaps offense, which only managed no more than 160 yards.

Brennan (10-2) reached Westlake territory only twice.

Hayes Brodhead’s blocked punt put Westlake ahead at the Bears 1-yard line late in the first quarter, and two plays later Wise hit normally defensive lineman Cullen Devine for a wide-open 3-yard TD pass.

Wise’s 4-yard run to cap a 58-yard score late in the second quarter gave the Chaps a 14-0 lead at halftime. His 2-yard TD dash in the third quarter capped off the drive from nearly the same distance with more than five minutes off the clock.

Noah Bartlett’s 24-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave Westlake a 24-0 lead before Cayden Glass’s 1-yard TD run after a halfback pass set up the Bears’ score.

Westlake (11-1) will play former district rival Johnson or Los Fresnos in the regional semifinals.
