Mother Arrested After 4-Year-Old Son Shoots Himself in Parking Lot: Reports

A mother in California was reportedly arrested and charged with multiple charges after her 4-year-old son shot himself earlier this week.

By local sales points CBS SacramentoABC affiliate KXTV and NBC affiliate KCRALatisha Walker, 26, was arrested after the Sacramento Police Department said her son shot himself in the 4500 block of Mack Road on Friday, Oct. 25, around 1:45 p.m.

Walker’s bail was set at $75,000 and he now faces three felony charges, according to CBS Sacramento: possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, criminal concealment of a firearm and endangering the life of a child.

The attack took place inside a vehicle in the parking lot, KCRA reported. The outlet added that the child was expected to survive after being transported to a local hospital.

Based on testimony from multiple witnesses, KCRA said Walker was at a business at the time of the shooting.

Customers at nearby businesses heard the child crying for help, according to CBS Sacramento. 19-year-old Shynice Cordoba, who was in a beauty salon at the time, told the press that although she did not hear gunshots, she heard both her mother’s screams and a “noise.”

“I go outside, he’s just lying on the ground,” Cordoba said. “I need something to put pressure on his wound. . . . I take a tissue and put it on his wound. He was talking to me and I was talking to him, he was really scared.”

“He kept saying he shot himself, he shot himself. And I said, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay that he’s not in trouble.'” he continued.

Cordoba added: “He asked me to pick him up. But I had to reassure him and say no, you can’t get up. You should stay here. And we talked about it Paw Patrol and how old he was etc. Until they got here.”

A police spokesperson told CBS Sacramento that the child received medical attention at the scene before being brought to the hospital.

First responders “put pressure on his wound” and helped him “stay on his side,” according to KCRA.

Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department, said: Sacramento Bee The shooting incident is under investigation, police said, as they investigate how the boy got his hands on the gun.

Walker will make his first court appearance on Wednesday, October 31, according to CBS Sacramento.
