Murrells Inlet group continues tradition with Dia De Los Muertos celebration

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) – Viva La Noche Catering hosted a celebration in honor of ‘Day of the Dead’ on Sunday.

“I am very proud to see this come to life. “I’m probably the proudest wife out here right now,” Joyshonda Lewis said.

Lewis’ husband is one of those hosting Dia De Los Muertos celebrations at Murrells Bay.

She said her husband helped her learn a lot.

“I think yeah, it’s been eye-opening and mind-opening,” Lewis said.

Dia De Los Muertos or ‘Day of the Dead’ is a celebration that honors the dead.

“This is a good opportunity to enjoy the time we are still here together and to remember those who are no longer with us,” said Inigo Alarcia.

It’s a joyful day and a tradition that dates back to the ancient Aztecs.

It started with a belief that the dead come back one night a year to be with their loved ones, even if they cannot be seen.

The celebration includes dancing, food, and an altar where memories of those who have gone before are placed.

Alarcia wanted to adopt this tradition.

“There are a lot of Latino communities, but there aren’t a lot of celebrations for the Latino community. So this is a good way to interact with a mix of cultures.”

There is only one rule.

“No bad feelings allowed here,” he said.

The celebration stayed true to tradition with lots of food, music, face painting, stilt walks and more.

Matthew Rabin is the other creator of the event and gives this message to the community.

“I actually want to thank the community that came out to support. I love the diverse group we have here,” Rabin said.

Lewis is excited for a job well done.

“We will feel it happen. We provided this. “And as you can see, it was a great success,” he said.

Dia De Los Muertos is traditionally celebrated from midnight on November 1st until the end of the day on November 2nd.

Alarcia told WMBF News he hopes to come back next year for another celebration.
