Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad police on Saturday arrested 18 people for rioting, assault and criminal threats, nearly a week after a 19-year-old law student was allegedly attacked by a group of people outside a private college over an argument that took place in a school hall. Police identified the victim as Om Chaudhary, a resident of Nehru Nagar in Ghaziabad, who was pursuing BA LLB in a private college in Ghaziabad.

In the police complaint filed at Indirapuram police station on October 22, the victim’s father, Vinod Chaudhary, stated that on October 19, his son “went to Om’s college freshers’ party and accidentally dropped water on another student’s clothes.” “The problem escalated and a heated debate ensued.”

“The next day, the same student called Om to apologize. Om apologized in front of other students as requested and this was recorded on video. Despite the public apology, on October 22, two days after the incident, Om was returning home with a friend when he was attacked and brutally assaulted by a group of 20 to 25 people outside the college gate,” read the first information report recorded later, based on the complaint.

“After the intervention of local people, the suspects fled the scene, threatening Om with dire consequences. Indirapuram deputy police commissioner Swatantra Singh said he was informed that his condition was stable.
