  • Liverpool move eight points clear at the top with win over St Mary’s
  • Mo Salah scores a second-half double to seal a dramatic comeback win
  • Arne Slot does not believe his players will be carried away by the leadership

Arne Slot has dismissed the idea that Liverpool will be caught up in the Premier League title race by eight points.

Mo Salah scored twice as the Reds beat Southampton 2-1 after Mateus Fernandes and Adam Armstrong canceled out Dominik Szoboszlai’s first goal.

Manchester City’s collapse means Liverpool have breathing room at the top ahead of Sunday’s huge clash between the teams at Anfield. But Slot says his team maintains balance.

‘It’s nice to have this position but we’re definitely not getting carried away,’ he said. ‘We also know what he has to do to get that lead and those wins.

‘I think for us there was only one or two games where we won by a big margin but the rest we won by a small margin so we know how difficult it is to win a game.

‘These players have been in the Premier League longer than me, but I think even later in last season Arsenal were eight points ahead and Manchester City still came back.

‘If you face Arsenal, City, Chelsea and all the other teams, you know they can all win many games in a row.’

Slot added about Salah: ‘We always know we can count on him when things are difficult for us because after losing 2-1 I didn’t really feel like this was the moment we could score.

‘It was a great pass from Ryan Gravenberch and the timing of the run and how Mo finished it was special.

‘It helps you get back into the game and we needed that goal in the last 25 minutes we played because it was just a matter of time for me to score the third goal.’
