Officials said that a DHL cargo plane crashed into a house while it was about to land at Lithuania’s Vilnius airport early on Monday, killing one person on the plane and injuring three others.

A spokesman for the government’s National Crisis Management Center said the flight was operated by SWIFT airline on behalf of DHL and took off from Leipzig, Germany, before crashing at around 3.30am GMT.

The spokesman said there was nothing to indicate that an explosion occurred before the crash.

“Right now we have no data indicating an explosion,” he said.

An airport spokesman said the plane was a Boeing 737-400. Police said at a press conference that 12 people were evacuated from the house where the plane crashed.

Rescue services said the plane hit the ground and skidded for at least 100 meters (110 yards) before crashing into the building.

The head of the National Crisis Management Center said that the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Firefighters were seen pouring water on a smoking building about 1.3 km (0.8 mi) north of the airport runway at 05:30 GMT. A large police and ambulance presence was seen nearby and many nearby main streets were cordoned off.

Flightradar24 said on social media platform X that the flight took off from Leipzig at 2.08am GMT.

Germany is investigating multiple fires caused by incendiary devices hidden inside packages at a warehouse in Leipzig earlier this year, Germany’s attorney general said in October.

British counter-terrorism police said shortly afterwards that they were investigating a warehouse fire in July when a package caught fire and were liaising with other European law enforcement agencies to see if there was a link to similar incidents elsewhere.
