Sofina Foods Inc. charged in death of worker at Edmonton smokehouse

An Ontario-based food processing company faces 26 charges under Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation in connection with the death of a worker at its Edmonton facility in 2023.

The victim, a plant supervisor at Sofina Foods Inc., left his workstation to check the temperature of a cooking program at a smokehouse on March 2, 2023.

Allegedly, these people were trapped in the smokehouse and were later found by another worker.

OHS said the facility supervisor died from injuries sustained when he was trapped in the smoke chamber.

Sofina Foods Inc. is accused of not ensuring that the smokehouse door opened from the inside and of not receiving adequate training for its employees to do their jobs healthily and safely.

None of the charges have been tested in court.
