Leaving items outside your home during Garda warning increases risk of theft

Gardaí have issued a warning and advice irish houses on a particular item after noticing an increase in thefts in recent weeks.

The Garda statement said: “After reviewing crime incidents over the past week we have seen an increase in domestic burglaries and we encourage people to pay more attention to their home security.

“More than 46% of domestic burglaries occur when intruders enter the rear of the property through an open or unsecured door or window. “Some of the recent burglaries in the borough have occurred in broad daylight.

They have issued specific advice regarding stairs. “Landlord ladders were used to gain access to properties. Ensure they are safe,” the statement continued.

“Check your doors and windows for faults. Consult your local PSA approved locksmith who will be able to give you good advice.

“Make sure sheds and garages are locked with a security-rated padlock.

“If you have an alarm, make sure you use it and that it is in good working order. Consider extending it to your shed or outbuilding.

“Consider the lighting on your property. Early evening hours are also when burglaries are common.

“Theft is an effective crime and we urge people to report people or vehicles that are not in your area. Check for vulnerable neighbours.”
