Alonso says improvement of Boniface could enable Leverkusen to play against Werder

BERLIN: Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface is recovering from a car accident and minor injuries and will be available for Saturday’s league match at Werder Bremen, coach Xabi Alonso said on Friday.

Nigerian striker Boniface was a passenger in a car involved in an accident and suffered minor injuries to his hand and foot, a day after scoring the winning goal in the German champions’ 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

“We will decide after today’s training,” Alonso said at the press conference. “He had a few days to put this behind him. I saw him yesterday and told him he was feeling better.”

“We will wait. If he feels better, he will go to Bremen with us. Today is training and the last test.”

Boniface has scored five goals in the league so far this season but missed Wednesday’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Brest.

Leverkusen is in fourth place with 14 points, with one win in its last three matches, while three of them are at the top.

It is also stated that midfielder Amine Adli, who broke his fibula in the Brest match and had surgery on Thursday, will be away from the fields for a few months.

Alonso said: “It’s a big loss for us. We will miss him.” he said. “He is a very important player for the team and always has a big impact. This was the worst news. Now we have to wait for him for a long time.”
