Why do we all love a good scare?

The thought of coming face to face with a ghost is seductively scary.

What’s so bad about being afraid but it feels so good?

It turns out that the brain processes fear just as it processes excitement.

Dr Dean Mobbs, California Institute Technology neuroscientist and fear expert, it has been said before Metro that our body responds to fear by producing opioids to prepare for pain.

‘When we enter scary houses or watch horror movies, it causes the release of neurotransmitters that excite us, knowing that we are safe but also in danger,’ he said.

Niloufar Esmaeilpour, a registered clinical counselor, certified supervisor and founder of Lotus Therapy and Counseling Centre. he told usWhile our fight-or-flight response is activated in our subconscious, knowing that it is not real allows us to enjoy the fear.

‘The brain’s prefrontal cortex regulates this fear and allows us to enjoy the experience rather than be consumed by it, if we want to,’ he says.

This triggers the release of dopamine, a hormone responsible for pleasure and motivation, which can keep us coming back for more.

Chloe believes she is being haunted by ghosts and awakened by spirits at the foot of her bed.

He believes that they have come forward to prove that there is life after death, but he is not afraid.

‘It’s okay because they can’t hurt me,’ he said.

‘I just lay back and sleep or ignore them.’

Once, while Chloe was collecting her children’s Legos, she said a ghost was building a Lego house without her looking (Image: Jam Press)

In fact, he said, spirits can even be playful.

‘One Halloween, I started picking up Lego from where the children had played the night before, but when I came back into the room five minutes later I found the Lego had been transformed into a house.

‘Ghosts sure like to play, that’s for sure.’

He said there was no need to fear, although people became ‘anxious’ as ‘the whispers of the dead draw nearer and the signs grow stronger’.

‘Nothing can do anything to you,’ he said.

‘They actually miss you and want you to realize that they are okay.’
