MARION COUNTY, Florida (WESH) — A 93-year-old Marion County man was arrested last weekend after deputies say he tried to kill his wife for the second time this month.

Helmut Lockner was arrested at his home on October 26 and faces two charges of attempted first-degree murder (premeditated).

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by WESH 2, Lockner’s wife called 911 after saying her husband came up behind her, wrapped a rope around her neck and pulled back so hard she “felt her circulation cut off.”

While events intensified in the afternoon, Lockner’s wife said the morning started normally for the couple who have been married and living together for 60 years. According to the statement, the woman said that before the incident, she and her husband were sitting on separate chairs and watching television.

According to the affidavit, the woman said Lockner told her he was in constant pain and “wanted to die,” but added that it was something the man said often. According to the woman, it was common for her husband to also get up and pace the living room, so she ignored him when he got up and got behind his chair.

That’s when Lockner’s wife said she felt something wrap around her neck and realized her husband was trying to strangle her.

Although the woman managed to get her hand between the rope and her neck, she still had bruising, redness and scrapes on her neck and chin, according to deputies. After escaping, he was able to call 911 from a safe location.

The 911 dispatcher could hear Lockner say, “You can die with me,” the affidavit said.

Lockner’s wife said in her interview that the man tried to smother her with a pillow two weeks ago. He said that while the woman was having difficulty breathing, Lockner stated that he “didn’t want to leave the woman alone.”

She eventually managed to stop Lockner and told deputies she didn’t think he would try to hurt her again.

During an interview with Lockner, the man told deputies he was dying and did not want to leave his wife alone. According to the man’s testimony, his plan was to kill his wife before taking his own life.

Following his arrest, Locker was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation and then to the Marion County Jail. Deputies requested that the man be held without bail.
