Diplomat’s second season ends on a more exciting note than season 1

For much of the second season, Kate believes Nicol Trowbridge has betrayed her country. Until he discovered that she was completely innocent, completely unaware of the attack. Instead, others in his cabinet, including the Conservative Party’s former campaign manager Margaret Roylin, are responsible.

But then, a twist within a twist, he reveals that he did so at the behest of Vice President Grace Penn, who finally comes into being five episodes later. Allison Janney’s scene-stealing character wasn’t meant for anyone to die, but they did. , so he plans to resign and let Kate campaign for the Vice President role in his place.

And then it’s like an army of secret service officers pours out of the house and runs across the lawn to where Kate and Grace are standing.

“He’s dead, Katie. The President is dead. Grace Penn is the President.”

Shocked and breathless, Kate comes to a realization as the camera moves in on Grace, and their lives are changed forever. Dramatic music (even labeled as such in the subtitles) transports us to the credits.

And here we are. Just as Kate blew the chance to support Grace’s bid to take over when the President resigned or ended his term, Hal effectively sidelined the President.

Even leaving aside the fact that Hal somehow killed the President with a phone call (!!!), this soapy, ridiculous event comes out of nowhere and ends the season on a much different, if not more explosive, note than the actual car bomb. Boom in season one.

The writers deftly avoid this comparison by focusing on the melodrama fans who come to this show, rather than trying to bridge this cliffhanger with even greater life-or-death stakes. That’s why we’re treated to slapstick theatrics and exciting power plays, which is why choosing to end season two on this note is the smartest move. Diplomat He might have done it.
