A Lowell man allegedly raped a woman in Bay Village last Saturday and tried to rape another woman he randomly encountered in the Theater District, according to court records.

Solomon Wambui, 25, was arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court, where he was ordered held without bail under the state’s dangerousness statute. Records show he pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and assault with intent to commit rape.

According to court records, a 26-year-old woman was walking home after working late in Bay Village around 4:30 a.m. The woman was talking to her mother on the phone when Wambui allegedly followed her on Cortes Street.

“Can you go?” the woman asked Wambui, according to court records. “Can I have some personal space?”

Wambui allegedly responded by insisting the woman “come with me.” I can help you. “I can bring you home,” prosecutors said in court records.

Prosecutors claimed that at this point, Wambui grabbed the woman first by the neck and then from behind, dragged her to the ground and raped her.

“The entire attack and rape of the first woman was recorded on video,” prosecutors said.

As Wambui ran down Arlington Avenue, the woman recorded him on her cellphone, called 911 and gave his description to police. Prosecutors said officers began searching the area and located a man matching the suspect’s description walking out of Eliot Norton Park around 5:15 a.m.

Prosecutors said a 47-year-old woman walking nearby told police the man had sexually assaulted her.

She later told police that a man began following her as she walked on Charles Street South.

“He increased his walking speed and she did the same,” prosecutors said.

Prosecutors alleged Wambui grabbed the woman and put his hand over her mouth, causing her to have trouble breathing due to her asthma.

Prosecutors alleged Wambui forced her into a grassy section of the park and assaulted her.

He was crying. She tried to get away from him by twisting and contorting her body. The victim tried to scream as much as she could, but it was difficult to do so because she covered her mouth with her hand,” prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the woman managed to persuade Wambui to stop and walk out of the park “to see if she could get away from him.”

Police searching for the man who raped the woman on Cortes Street saw Wambui and noticed his zipper was open and blood was coming from a scratch, prosecutors said. Officers arrested him in connection with both attacks, prosecutors said.

“The nature and circumstances of these crimes can only be described as violent, cruel and utterly heinous,” prosecutors said. “The only reason he was discovered and eventually arrested was because he was close to attacking the first victim and had attacked another victim at the same time.”

In court documents, prosecutors said Wambui had no prior convictions for domestic violence and was not on probation due to any recent convictions.

The defense attorney was not immediately available Friday.

His arrest was first reported by the Boston Herald.

Wambui is expected to appear in court again on November 22.
