HANOVER — New York State Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 90 that claimed the life of a State Highway maintenance worker.

The worker was struck by a motor vehicle just before 8 a.m. Monday at mile marker 455.2 westbound near the Buffalo Road overpass, near the Thruway 58 exit from Silver Creek and Irving. County EMS, Irving Fire Department, Silver Creek Fire Department and law enforcement responded. The coroner was also called to the scene.

At 8:15 a.m., Thruway reported lanes were closed between Exits 57A and 58. Later in the morning, westbound lanes were closed at Exit 57 from Hamburg to Silver Creek. Those lanes were later reopened.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and New York State Transit Authority are assisting in this investigation.

“We are heartbroken over the devastating death of a dedicated public servant, and my prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.” state Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement Monday afternoon. “Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road, and they always deserve our utmost attention. “This is the second death involving a Highway maintenance worker this year and is a sobering reminder to slow down, pull over safely and be alert to any vehicles stopped on the side of the road.”

Police said more information will be released as the investigation continues.
